TWO HOURS LATER, I was at Cove Canyon with one of my GMs when my cell rang. I excused myself to take the call. "Hello."

"Mac, can you hear me? It's a really bad connection."

"I'm here Mary. What's up?

"The contractor for the Wilson project called. He says there's a problem and he needs your input."

"What kind of problem?"

"Something to do with changes to the design."

I rubbed my brow, thinking. "Ahh, okay I remember. We made two structural changes. He needs the updated plans. Can you print them up and get them delivered to him."

"Which pages?"

"If you open the file it's the two with last Friday's date on them."

I heard Mary tapping the keys. "Got 'em."

"Good. Publish them and that should take care of him. Thanks."

"What about the subcontractors?"

"They don't need this update. It doesn't affect them. Anything else?"

"Nope. I'll call you if there is." Mary ended the connection.

I returned to my discussion with the GM, Anthony Higgins. He had been complaining about an erosion issue at the job site, one of our largest projects.

"Thanks for coming out so quickly, Mac. I knew you'd want to see this."

"I'm not sure what we can accomplish, but yeah, I need to understand the issue."

Tony felt sure that if we didn't address the problem now, it would come back to bite us in the butt later. Foundations were the backbone of any building and I didn't tolerate haphazard work. I climbed down into the trench with him to study his finding.

Tony and I stood at the base for the structure. "See right here," he said, "and you can follow it down all the way to the edge."

We were standing on a thirty-six-inch-deep slab of ledge, but a two-inch crack running perpendicular revealed there was a significant erosion situation happening that stretched approximately thirty-five-feet through the middle.

"Crap," I breathed.

Tony responded. "That's what I'm saying. I don't want to pour cement and hope for the best."

"This is beyond my expertise. I need to call in an outside engineer. One who specializes in this type of situation." When we climbed out, we were covered in mud. It was agreed that all further construction would stop until we had an answer. This could turn out to be a dead issue or it could be an underground spring at work. Either way I wouldn't put anyone in danger. We closed down the operation and notified the owners. They weren't happy, but understood it couldn't be helped.

Next, a call to Mary was in order. "What's up, boss?" she answered.

"We need an engineer who can do a study on the Jenkins job. We've got an erosion issue that's gonna require a certified specialist. I shut it down. See if you can get Bill Korman to take a look, or if not him try Manny Rios." I climbed into my truck and waited to see if she needed anything else.

"Okay, where you going?"

"I'm off to see about some plans in Blue River. I'm gonna stop home first. I need to clean up. If you want to reach me I'll be in range the rest of the day.
